O is shaped like a circle, so connect it to round things your child knows, like oranges, wheels and plates. O is a vowel with a short sound, as in octopus and ox, and a long sound, as in ocean and oval. Owls are brown, gray or white, oranges are orange, and octopuses can be red or orange and can even change color.

To practice the round shape, start at the top and go around to the left, the same direction used for writing a, c, d and g. Let your child color rings inside the O, from the outside edge inward, like a target.

Questions parents and teachers ask

Why is O a good first letter to write?

O is one smooth curved line, so young children can draw it without stopping. Learning to start at the top and go left also prepares them for a, c, d and g.

What is the difference between the letter O and the number 0?

They look alike, but O is a letter and 0 is a number. In many fonts, the number 0 is narrower and the letter O is rounder.
